From Monday through Monday the 9 of us (6 adults/3 kids) got a cabin in Pagosa Springs, CO. We booked through Sunetha Properties and were very pleased. Christine, the manager, was very helpful. She found us a cabin that had everything we were looking for within our budget. We were a few minutes outside of town and right by the grocery store. We loved the cabin! It had a fully furnished kitchen we could cook our own meals in, which helped save a lot of money. There was also a recreation room down the street that tenants can use and for $6.50pp/per day you can use the hot tub and other amenities the community has to offer. The drive up the mountain to Wolf Creek Ski Area is easy and we felt like we had the whole mountain to ourselves when we arrived. Wolf Creek isn’t as big as Taos but they still have great ski runs. For lunch and cocktails you must ski down to the base. There is a new place half way down called The Ravens Nest and this is an easier place to stop for a restroom break and snacks but no cocktails. Skiing down to the base is fine but you will have to hike up the hill a little to get on one of the four lifts, which is a little annoying.
The kids really enjoyed the bunny slope. It was just their size and it has its own small lift that ran all day. You can do lessons for kids at Wolf Creek too.The Town of PagosaIn the Town of Pagosa there’s a ton of stuff do. Last year we tried out snowmobiling with SnowCountry Adventure Tours. It was about $60pp and a great time. Just don’t forget to wear your goggles and hat. It gets really cold when you’re blowing through the trails.
We also tested out the Astraddle-A-Saddle horse drawn sled ride but it didn’t quite live up to the snowmobile adventure. You can also pre-arrange a BBQ dinner and make an evening of it. It would make for a nice date night…We spent some time at the Bear Creek Saloon, Wednesday night is karaoke night which is a lot of fun. I also highly recommend you stop in for lunch at Kip’s Grill. It had the best spicy shrimp tacos I have ever eaten, perfect for a little hangover from karaoke night. And don’t forget to visit the Pagosa Brewery, great pizza and beer. Try the sampler, the Kayaker Cream Ale was my favorite.
On the road trip home we stopped in Amarillo for the night. We’ve heard about the world famous Big Texan for years so we had to try it. If you finish the 72oz steak and everything that comes with it in 1 hour your meal is free, otherwise it’s $72. They will even let you sit on a stage with others trying to do the same while everyone watches. We didn’t try it but it was fun to watch. It was a great way to end our road trip.
