5 Airport Tricks To Know Before You Step On A Plane

By Paige Desroches

Air travel doesn’t have to be stressful, and many people enjoy the time they spend in airports and on airplanes. It’s important to be prepared so you know what to expect and how to make the most out of your time at the airport. Make the most of the time you spend in the airport. Try these trips to be prepared, which seasoned air travelers know all too well.

Bring Plenty of Food

Travelers on a budget should know that it’s perfectly acceptable to bring food into an airport and onto a plane. It’s drinks that you can’t get through security, so you’ll need to rely on vendors after the checkpoint or the plane’s complimentary beverage service. Airport restaurants and airplane food is notoriously expensive and sub-par, so stop at your favorite fast food restaurant before the airport, or pack a lunch from home to tide you over on your travels.

Pack Carefully

You can speed through the check-in and security process if you’ve spent your time at home packing wisely. If you’re planning to check bags, pay attention to weight limits, and make sure you don’t leave valuables in them. In addition, make sure you’re aware of what fees the airline charges to check bags. Many frequent travelers choose to carry on only, which allows you to print your boarding pass at home and head straight to the security line. If you do this, make sure your toiletries are an approved size and be ready to take your laptop out of its bag when you get to the conveyor belt.

Enjoy the Wi-Fi

Most airports have free Wi-Fi, and many planes are equipped with it as well. This means that you can bring a laptop or mobile device and use it to keep you entertained as you wait and when you fly. However, be aware that these open networks can lead to security risks. Save your banking for a secure connection, and consider using a service like Lifelock to monitor against identity theft. You wouldn’t want to come back from your vacation to find that an identity thief has hacked into all of your accounts while you were gone.

Be Attentive to Your Kids

If you’re traveling with little ones, keep them in mind the whole time you’re packing, especially when putting together your carry on bags. It never hurts to be prepared for the worst, so make sure you have an extra outfit for each child (or several for a baby) in case there are mishaps. In addition, bring plenty of kid-friendly snacks to guard against whining due to hunger. Mobile devices are a great source of entertainment, and remember that it’s perfectly acceptable to break your usual rules to keep your kids happy while you’re traveling.

Embrace Delays

Delayed flights are just part of the picture, so don’t get overly upset if you run into delays. Being disgruntled isn’t going to speed up the process. Instead, try to build a buffer time into your agenda so you aren’t worried about missing something at your destination. Then kick back, relax, and enjoy your extra time to hang out at the airport, window shop, or surf the web while you wait.

Travelers spend millions of hours each year at airports before stepping onto planes, and with some attention to detail, you can make the most of this time. Airports are great places for people watching, striking up conversations with other travelers, and enjoying some down time. Be prepared in advance so you will be relaxed at the airport and can make the most of it.
